Drawings, Vol. 1 is the first in a series of open invitations into Sam Hoyek’s drawing practice, the cornerstone of his art-making process. It compiles minimally edited drawings and sketches made between 2019 and 2025. Some pages document emotionally charged moments, while others emerged from the unremarkable circumstances of daily life. Some ideas developed into larger projects, while others remained fleeting expressions. Every spread reflects Hoyek’s commitment to returning to the page and allowing the pen to guide the hand.

Beyond serving as a personal archive, the book recalls the formative act of drawing and presents it as a powerful worlding process worthy of sustained practice. Drawings, Vol. 1 is an ode to drawing and to the thoughts, images, and feelings it allows to take form. It records where drawing has taken Sam and extends that invitation to whoever holds it now.
